Rocket Piggy
Challenge: Redesign the app and discover pain points, propose solutions to improve user experience.
Deliverables: User research report. Persona. Task flows. Sketches. UI. Prototype.
Role: Senior UX Designer

Rocket Piggy makes learning about money fun for kids. Easy for parents.
Challenge
-
The current app requires a redesign to make it look more professional and trustworthy.
-
The product is currently a free online service that doesn't generate revenue.
Goals & Metrics
-
Improve the app to create a professional, trustworthy and friendly user experience.
-
Optimize the web experience on mobile devices (piggy bank).
-
Provide instructions to users to better arrange children's chores.
-
Provide users guidance on the next steps after completing chores (user-kids).
-
Explore various revenue generation opportunities and convert more users to paying, customers using the paid service to connect with the physical piggy bank.
RESEARCH PROCESS
Competitive Studies
To understand similar products on the market, I did competitive studies and analyzed their UVP (unique value proposition), helpful features, and common user complaints. Also, to explore opportunities of revenue generation, we looked into potential bank partners for RESP payment structures.

Competitive Studies

User Testing
I conducted usability testing with 10 users (Moms - 2 groups) with the goal to find out:
-
What needs and goals drive people to use "Chores and Allowance" app?
-
What are people struggling with while using the current "Chores and Allowance?
-
How can we build trust with customers?
-
How can we better connect users with the physical piggy bank?
Synthesis & Analysis
During the synthesis of our findings, I recognized some common pain paints users experienced when using the current app.

Persona
To help communicate information about users that I collected during research, I created a provisional persona.

She juggles jobs, kids, husbands, shopping, social events, and finances…
But she is purpose-driven to do the best possible for her kids.
Goals
-
Smart Habits Start Early
-
Make every kid good with money.
-
Freedom to work where & how she wants
-
We want our kids to be smart with money, to be in control, to take responsibility, and to understand when it’s gone it’s gone.
Frustrations
-
Dissatisfied with using paper charts and sticky notes on their fridge for organizing and assigning chores and tracking their progress.
-
I was stunned by the lack of apps/tools targeting Parents and to help them with their day to day needs.
Insights Generation
To determine the priorities, we did card sorting and organized user findings on an affinity map. I facilitated meetings and came up with four key categories involved in typical in typical user journey: 1. landing; 2. set up chores; 3. allowance details; 4. piggy bank.

Ideation
I facilitated several design sprints with the team, to map out the information architecture, task flows, and come up with sketch ideas on how to solve the problems identified. I created concept sketches, exploring how to streamline the process, provide users clear instructions, and build trust throughout the process.

SOLUTIONS
Lo-Fi Wireframe
After reviewing the UI sketches, I translated finalized ideas into Lo-Fi wireframes, and built clickable prototype for validation testing. One of the biggest challenges we had was - whether to keep or remove the connection to the user's bank account. The partners believed it was important to keep the connect feature as it is useful for generating revenue and makes the physical piggy bank more professional. However, the validation testing proved 7 out of 10 users were confused and untrustworthy by the connect feature and had no idea what it means. After rounds of discussion, we came to an agreement to remove the connect feature from the allowance page while keeping it in the physical piggy bank detail page. It avoids confusion when users review the allowance while keeping the feature available when it's needed.

Hi-Fi Prototype
After validating our Lo-Fi prototype and making a few iterations, we moved into Hi-Fi phase. Taking the mobile-first approach, I started the responsive design with mobile which has the most limitations to best understand essential features, then translated the design into larger devices.

I created Hi-Fi assets for setting up chores, allowance and alien world. Also, I explored animation opportunities to enhance the experience while kids play the games.

VALIDATE
We conducted validation testing of the mobile and piggy bank clickable prototype with 10 users. Below is a summary of the findings.

After Thoughts
With the app re-design, we are able to significantly improve the product clarity, piggy bank, and pad experience. For future improvement I have a couple of suggestions:
-
Consider adding more information such as testimonials, user reviews, press and other supportive data to build trust with users.
-
Users like to see animations appear on the page after all the chores are done. And users love seeing milestones with animations.
-
When looking add chores page, provides chores that match the age of the user's children by default.
-
When sending pay allowance, provide an option that allows users to assigned to different pockets.
-
For paid content to piggy bank, users would like to previews and trials.
